My yellow JK

Hi guys

Some of have seen The-Gamer's take on a JK (http://www.scale4x4rc.org/forums/showthread.php?t=79191r) . At some point he decided to let it go and I took the chance to get a decent scale truck

On 26st December 2015 we gather some folks to do some wheeling at a local trail and I took the JK for it's first outing. Nice truck but managed to break the panhard mount and the hood hinges(don't ask me how :) )

http://i1068.photobucket.com/albums/...psemccngz9.jpg

First, made a simple 3d printed panhard mount
http://i1068.photobucket.com/albums/...psvdkh1gmf.jpg

Afterwards, an aluminium servo mount to replace the plastic one
http://i1068.photobucket.com/albums/...psqan8fzvi.jpg

The links at front were the firsts to replace
http://i1068.photobucket.com/albums/...psogt6humx.jpg

To hide the servo and motor/gearbox,made this simple radiator
http://i1068.photobucket.com/albums/...psz0y29xsr.jpg

http://i1068.photobucket.com/albums/...psqjeldcfi.jpg

This truck came with the GCM front motor mount. There was nothing wrong with that but I wanted to lower the motor to improve the CoG and make room for a future fake motor

Here, with the GCM kit:
http://i1068.photobucket.com/albums/...psqm1pujyf.jpg

And here, the gearbox I made, it's about 12:1, metal gears. Nothing fancy but works fine and fits between the rails
http://i1068.photobucket.com/albums/...psn78anz7a.jpg

How low??

http://i1068.photobucket.com/albums/...psdwj5ox87.jpg

After a break, a event was aproaching and I've had to pick it again to make it trail ready. The hood opened again

http://i1068.photobucket.com/albums/...psktjumo13.jpg

Made the wheel wells decent

new rock sliders to mount electronics and battery

Nicer links

http://i1068.photobucket.com/albums/...pscxhjuenn.jpg

http://i1068.photobucket.com/albums/...pswaxg6d5l.jpg

And then, the acessories. The rear bumper has a spare tire mount but I prefer mounting useful stuff.

And this is on that even, Canis Lupus, where I paired up with The-Gamer

http://i1068.photobucket.com/albums/...psayb2trov.jpg

After a grueling day on the trail, super hot, the JK don't overheated nor broke anything. Only a shock unscrew itself but was a quick fix.At the end of the day, even won the "more realistic truck". A real surprise

The work it's never finished and I have some more plans for this truck

Re: My yellow JK

I was thinking to change for 1.55's for quite some time. Finally bit the bullet, got Iroks to maintain the same height(the other choice was Growlers but they looked small on the JK) and decided to do the wheels instead of buying them. I love the look of stamped wheels and other simple, effective designs(specially holes), function>form. So I've decided for a slotted design, looks good and I can make it on the machines at work(no CNCs)

First stage, only to see how the offset looked on the truck...

http://i1068.photobucket.com/albums/...pslyuus6p4.jpg

...looks good to me
http://i1068.photobucket.com/albums/...pswgbc5gqe.jpg

Drilled the holes for the hex hubs and mounted them on the truck with the Iroks
http://i1068.photobucket.com/albums/...pssgjzqqn6.jpg

The slots are in and so the hubs(to replace the usual M4 nuts
http://i1068.photobucket.com/albums/...psxcujquuk.jpg

http://i1068.photobucket.com/albums/...psl21bujlb.jpg

What do you think?

http://i1068.photobucket.com/albums/...pscnw1ygq3.jpg

On other hand, when I mounted the 1.55's for the first time, noticed that the wheels sat to close of the fender. Don't know how me and TheGamer missed that all this time :) .

Well, had to do another pair of links, 9mm longer (about 3/8" for you 'mericans) and now it's sits properly but..
http://i1068.photobucket.com/albums/...ps1ubxnkxa.jpg

...had to adjust all the steering.Move the panhard mount, cut the servo horn and change the steering link

tight fit

That's all for now...

Amazing! LOVE the wheels I'm a huge slot mag guy. The transmission is very nice too. I'm gather parts now to do a 1.55 build of a Vaterra ascender with the blazer body. I'm going to do a forward motor mount too. Great widea rknand I really like the detailed pictures too.

Very nice, great job on the wheels. I like links with straight (not bent) rod ends, the bent type usually get more bent or broken. Whole Jeep looks great! :)

Glad you like the wheels. I also liked this old school design and even stamped wheels. I think they better suited to offroad than elaborate designs. I'll keep an eye out for your 1.55 blazer ;)

Thanks! yes, this ends might be weaker but this truck will not see much abuse. Was only a way to allow straight links

Small update:

Worked some detailing in the hood:

http://i1068.photobucket.com/albums/...pseodg21r7.jpg

http://i1068.photobucket.com/albums/...psjlgjfll6.jpg

Already painted with truck's new color, only needs mate clear coat to tone down the shinyness

So...the light bar mounts worked fine until the truck decided to roll several times down a hill. Made these to stop seeing the lightbar flapping around

Hi guys!!

I finally painted my JK. Hope I'd never have to do it again. Masking tape fest!!

http://i1068.photobucket.com/albums/...psecbua5nk.jpg

Took it to our Ultimate Scale Experience event in Alfena, Portugal where it rode all day with zero issues and...

...took the prize of "3rd best truck :)

Re: My yellow JK

let's resurrect this thread:

My JK came with homemade axle trusses that worked fine but since i've lowered the motor, panhard kept it hitting it and reduce the flex

Came up with this:

Re: My yellow JK

After replacing the front truss, finished the rear one I've started a long time ago and lost interest.

Unwanted side-effect: The wheelbase grew about 5mm. Because this is a new Jk I've already cut a bit of the front fenders, went all in, making longer links,

After some modding, did these smaller fenders, printed in ASA

Re: My yellow JK

Something I've been working on. I want to keep this red JK body topless but the full doors don't look good. So I took them off to copy the basic shape and do them as half doors. I'm replicating the Mopar ones, including door cards

Needs the fake hinges and the locking mechanism

Thanks! they took some time because I'm jumping between projects. I'm picking what is in my mind any given time. At the moment, I'm working on making extra space under the dash to fit an action figure with it's whole legs

Re: My yellow JK

I don't update this for a long time. This JK is still my go-to truck on the few times I go wheeling. It is the less complicated and more capable of all and it is always ready to go.

It ran a 35t HH torquemaster pro +1080 but had the itch to get a Fusion SE 1800kv. The Fusion is so smooth starting up and the FOC is nothing I'm used to.

The trouble is that all the drivetrain slope becames noticeable. Ordered 3 driveshafts and while I'm waiting for them,an idea appeared for a deeper overhaul.

Designed this chassis with a mix of a real JK frame and the scx10 rails I have so everything fits, even links:

https://i.imgur.com/9gejcw5h.jpeg
https://i.imgur.com/AoLHr4Vh.jpeg

https://i.imgur.com/Xd2LkxSh.jpeg

Has 2 widths like the 1:1,put the cantilever inside the rails. At the front it is slightly wider than the scx10 to have more space for the gearbox. I'm currently printing the skidplate, which will have the transfer case integrated
The cantilever system has dedicated holes and added several mounting options for the rear upper links

cooper_xl 03-04-2023 11:45 AM

Re: My yellow JK

Rough mock-up with everything transfered from the old rails. I need a pair of pinions to finish the transfer case. There are changes needed on the skidplate: Different link hole placement and some change to be easier to mount the screws. I will also make the body mounting holes integrated on the servo mount and in the rear truss

Re: My yellow JK

My JK came with a RC4WD Rampage Recovery bumper and it is pretty cool. On their page, I wouldn't look twice but mounted, suits well a JK, in my opinion

While doing this chassis, noticed that would suffer from the same problem with the Unimog build: With the body on top, would look the same as before

So an old idea came again to mind of doing a "stubby" bumper with a hoop over the headlights . On the past days, I've been sneaky and doing this while at work (shhhhhhhh). It is pretty rough right now but I'd like to share anyway.

I'm freestyling this. I just took note of the width and the space needed for the winch. The rest is coming naturally. I could machine it from a block of steel but would be heavy so welded 3 pieces of 3mm bar ,so it's hollow

https://i.imgur.com/b5aLpw9h.jpg

https://i.imgur.com/vzVI73Uh.jpg

https://i.imgur.com/Yz8L1Y4h.jpg

I needed to mount it on the chassis and secure the body before doing the hoop

cooper_xl 03-11-2023 11:43 AM

Re: My yellow JK

Continuing with the bumper. Yesterday, at work, did the holes to hold the winch and to mount to the chassis. My first idea was to make a plate for each side to use the same screws as the servo mount but had a better idea: hold it on the servo mount. I needed to modify the servo anyway so added a section that goes inside the bumper and holds it with 2 screws.
The 2 bigger holes on the back are to try to do something of custom bodyposts that screw on 2 mounts this body have (from being a toy grade RC)
